How I Built a Custom Shopify Automation App Using Sidekick AI (No Coding Required)

How I Built a Custom Shopify Automation App Using Sidekick AI (No Coding Required)

Why I Tried AI (Using Shopify AI Sidekick)

I’m always trying out new tools to make my workflow feel a little less chaotic and a lot more efficient—so when I came across Shopify Sidekick, I definitely had to try it.

But not just to sync typical e-commerce data like:

  • New orders

  • Customers

  • Inventory levels

  • Refunds

I wanted something much more specific to streamline our work processes. What started as a simple idea turned into a working custom app—built through iteration, testing, and finally problem-solving.

What Is Shopify Sidekick?

If you haven’t tried it yet, Shopify Sidekick is basically Shopify’s built-in AI assistant that helps you run your store a little smarter and more efficiently.

Think of it as your "24/7 Shopify expert — it brings together real commerce know-how with smart problem-solving, connects your data to spot opportunities, and helps you get things done faster, from insights to content to actual tasks."

It’s a tool that can:

  • Understand your store data

  • Help you build workflows

  • Generate content

  • Execute tasks

  • Surface insights you might otherwise miss

It helped connect the dots, surface what I actually needed, and move things along faster than I would’ve on my own.

What I Built (And Why It’s Different)

Using Shopify Sidekick, I created a custom Shopify-to-Monday automation app that goes beyond ecommerce integrations as whole.

Unlike most apps I’ve come across—which only sync:

  • New orders

  • Customers

  • Inventory

This one focuses on product-level insights and attributes.

Advanced Product Data Sync (Not Just Inventory)

The app syncs:

  • Product name

  • Price

  • Cost

  • Profit

  • Margin

  • Colour

  • Fragrance

  • Product Status

This gives a much clearer picture of product performance and positioning—not just stock levels.

Why This Matters

Most Shopify integrations focus on:

  • Inventory counts

  • Stock updates

But this build focuses on:

Business intelligence + product insights

Which means you can:

  • Track profitability at a glance

  • Plan marketing based on product attributes

  • Make smarter merchandising decisions

No Duplicate Protection on Resync

Another important feature we built in:

  • No duplicates are created during re-syncs

This ensures your Monday.com board stays:

  • Clean

  • Accurate

  • Reliable

Even after multiple syncs or updates.

Automatic Seasonal Categorization

Products are automatically grouped by seasons into:

  • Christmas

  • Halloween

  • Valentine’s

Based on keywords in the product title—making campaign and content planning much easier.

Clean, Organized Monday.com Boards

  • Columns are auto-created

  • Groups are structured automatically

  • Statuses are colour-coded if you need it.

No manual setup required.

Built-In Testing & Background Automation

  • Test sync option before full sync

  • Automatic updates when products are created or changed

Set it once—and it runs in the background.

The Reality: It Took 25 Iterations (And a Few Roadblocks)

Let’s be honest—this didn’t work perfectly on the first try.

It took about 25 iterations to get everything working exactly how I wanted and it still keeps going.

Column Name Conflict (A Sneaky One)**

One issue came from something simple:

The “Status” column conflicted with Monday.com’s default column.

➡️ The fix: renaming it to “Product Status”

Smarter Testing (Powered by AI)**

As issues came up, better troubleshooting features were introduced, including:

  • Test Sync (1 product) — test before syncing everything

Real-Time Error Visibility**

  • Warning banners show exact error messages from Monday.com

This made debugging faster and much more transparent.

A Quick Note on API Setup

  • API config resets on each sync

  • You must re-enter your API key for security

A small step—but important for protecting your data.

What This Means for Shopify Users

This is where things get exciting.

Instead of relying on multiple apps that only solve one piece of the puzzle…

You can build:

  • Custom workflows

  • Tailored dashboards

  • Smarter backend systems

All aligned with how you run your business. And honestly—this goes beyond just the workflow I built.

If you’re already using Monday.com as your CRM or for work management like we do, the possibilities are so much bigger.

You’re not just syncing data—you’re creating a system where:

  • Product data connects to marketing

  • Inventory connects to planning

  • Insights connect to decision-making

It becomes a central hub for how your business actually operates.

Why Shopify Sidekick Is Worth Exploring

Shopify Sidekick isn’t just helping you automate— It’s helping you build smarter systems.

Especially when:

  • You need more specific integrations

  • You care about data visibility

  • You want flexibility

Final Thoughts: This Is the Future of Ecommerce Workflows

This experience reinforced something important: AI doesn’t just save time—it changes how you think about building systems.

Because the real advantage isn’t just automation…It’s creating tools that actually reflect how your processes or business works.
